Spotlight: Aero Twisted & The Arcane Listed
Music is a powerful thing. It can change your emotion like time changes the seasons. Sometimes your mood may require a kick up the arse to give you a reason to be cheerful because, let’s be honest, life’s a bitch. Aero Twisted & The Arcane Listed are a band tailor made for such a task.
Bright, uplifting rock from the streets of Manchester, their songs are often led by percussive steel string acoustic guitars and jangly rhythms that bring to mind sunny days. Harmonies a la Queen and Thin Lizzy add to their sound, with lead guitarist Lewis Thompson utilizing his broad range of licks.
This isn’t necessarily balls out rock – although the band does cite the likes of AC/DC, Velvet Revolver and Black Sabbath amongst their breadth of influences – but what these songs do offer is cheerful, easy on the ear and richly talented.
"Percussive rhythms from guitarist Jay-Wise Martin couple themselves beautifully with Sarah Cairns’ vocal melodies – creating infectious results"
On See You Through, those percussive, bouncy rhythms from second guitarist Jay-Wise Martin couple themselves beautifully with Sarah Cairns’ vocal melodies – creating infectious results. Its lulling outro brings the song quite delicately to its conclusion, boasting the band’s musical versatility before one last romp through the chorus hits you by surprise.
Their individual talent is promising and their collective talent is even greater. They construct their songs with a smart musicianship, always looks at the bigger picture. They don’ rely on one muscly riff or one insatiable vocal hook to win you over. These are nuanced and carefully pieced together to emerge yourself within.
If it’s balls out rock that you desire however, Pretty Girl delivers. A crunching riff paves the way for Cairns’ holler, again catchy-as-hell, with Thompson’s blurred fingers unleashing some impressive lead work.
Where Did She Go, another highlight from their back catalogue, takes a Clapton-eqsue, seductive clean guitar line and creates something not far a million miles away from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers: Light, accessible but highly entertaining rock n’ roll.
Manchester is home to some fantastic bands and Aero Twisted & The Arcane Listed are one of them.
