There must be something in the beer in Manchester that makes certain members of the population strive to create the heaviest music possible. There are some cracking metal bands gigging regularly around the city and members of two of these have combined personnel to create Impavidus: a Latin word meaning fearless.
Featuring ex-members of My Wooden Pillow and Driven Apart, this new monster unleashes a brand new EP on our ears and it’s an angry bugger. Full of massive groove-along riffs and heavy breakdowns this venomous onslaught displays it’s furious colours that have been blended with a mix of thrash and death metal and in some cases a melodic pop sensibility. Particularly in Michelle Adamson’s clean vocal passages. These contain just the right hint of menace to avoid too sweet a taste but for those hungry for growl rest assured she can strip paint with her vicious roar. Listen to the ‘Shut the fuck up now’ refrain on Exculpate and see if you don’t want to do as you’re told!
With plenty of outstanding riffs and headbanging moments during this four round heavyweight battle, producer Chris Fielding has done a sterling job and given this EP a massive sound whilst ensuring clarity within the brutality. It’s a great musical effort all round and I think we’ll soon see Impavidus as another vital addition to the local live music scene and beyond.
Purchase this EP, see them live, and show your support for the music you love that’s been produced in your area. It’s worth it.
