RIP Big John 'J.T.' Thomas

RIP Big John 'J.T.' Thomas

jt1 At a time when we seem to be regularly reporting the death of famous “rock stars”, today we heard of another, John Thomas, who played with Budgie for about 10 years.

John Thomas joined Budgie in 1978 following the departure of (now lauded) guitar player Tony Bourge.   He helped manoeuvre the band from their classic, less successful period into a time of commercial success with the albums Power Supply, Nightflight and Deliver Us From Evil.

At the same time they were able to ride the resurgence of the heavy metal genre during the NWOBHM scene that developed during the early 80’s. Performances at the Reading Festival in ’80 and (headlining) in ’82 helped to cement their popularity, performances that were captured by the BBC and duly released as We Came, We Saw…

Although his style was simpler than Tony Bourge’s he was still a formidable guitarist and highly enjoyable to watch live.

RIP Big John J.T. Thomas
