Crescent Halo - In The Dragon's Lair
Words: Phil Weller
Watching Crescent Halo develop and blossom over the last year or so has been something Manchester Rocks is proud to have witnessed. Indeed, when we first came across the band they were still known as The Chirs Henderson Band, named after their enigmatic frontman, Chris Henderson. Queue several line-up changes, a new moniker – which the eagle-eyed will notice shares the same initials as their previous title – and a sheer wealth of passion and drive has turned them into a new beast altogether. And this beast has something great.
The fruits of their labour have boiled down to this, the band’s strongest song – a firm favourite across their early live shows – released as a standalone single. In The Dragon’s Lair is a classic metal song; a muscle flexing opening riff followed by a simple but driving verse and chorus built around letting Henderson’s epic reaching vocals shine. Then comes Henderson letting his lead playing ignite across a Judas Priest style solo section, then from there on out there's a suitably formed dragon slaying riff and an outro plucked straight from Master of Reality era Sabbath. They tick every box a metal band usually aims to attack and their growing ambition and talent is here captured and tangible.
Extra metal points are also awarded for writing a song about dragons. Dio would be proud.
