Introducing - Chris Tavener
An ingenious satirical singer-songwriter with comedic charisma to boot
Words: Tanisha Hanna-Beards
If you’ve ever been to a festival, experienced finding true love in the sweatiness of a nightclub or simply listened to a blues song or two then chances are Chris Tavener has creatively managed to sum up your entire experience down to a T. With his incredibly witty lyrics and eye for observational humour, Chris effortlessly spins accurately narrated tunes that’ll have you singing along before the song’s out.
With his crisp suits and carefully polished shoes, Chris’ retro-meets-modern look stands out from the crowd though he still seems somewhat at home in the small, wood-laden pub where I’m set to interview him.
Handshakes and greetings exchanged I begin quizzing Chris on what exactly he’s been up to and it all sounds pretty exciting…
Following a busy summer featuring performances at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, Chris began working on a video for his latest single, Modern Romance. This cleverly humorous ‘girl meets boy’ tale is certainly an accurate synopsis of many brief 21st century love affairs, or rather alcohol-fuelled romantic encounters. With a catchy, sing-along chorus, this well-structured tune showcases Chris’ skill as a songwriter but captures his imaginatively original take on everyday events.
Having just released this new single, Chris is already back in the studio recording a Christmas single set to warm those winter nights later in the year. He says he “plans on invading people’s homes this Christmas” through the medium of satirical songwriting but also that he’s in the midst of planning another national UK tour this October.
Drawing inspiration from artists like Randy Newman, Loudon Wainwright and even Monty Python, Chris’ style remains unique and entirely engaging. With his perfected stage presence and delivery during live performances combined with such clever material, Chris has crafted a memorable set worth shouting about.
