Deano Silk – Trouble Lies Within EP

Deano Silk – Trouble Lies Within EP

Jupiter Falls guitar demon Deano explores his inner being

Words: Brian 'Baldie' Mclean

Deano Silk has escaped Jupiter Falls’ clutches – well, almost – to produce a little masterpiece of his own. The five track EP is of the highest quality hard rock. He was strongly supported by his fellow Jupiter Fall band mates for this recording and it’s no surprise as Deano has written some cracking hard edged music here and inter-mixed it with various influences sucked in along the way.

It kicks off with Brand New to Me, a slow grinding riff rocker which excellently blends Jay’s soulful vocals and Deano’s brilliant guitar playing. The dude’s guitar playing here has so much feeling and gusto you get shivers down your spine.

Hands of a Broken Man and Keeper meanwhile are hard rock power ballads at their best. Keeper has a musical arrangement of great imagination. A slotted in piano interlude between some hot guitar bursts really works and makes you sit up and become absorbed into the guitarist’s mind.

Dirty Dancer is a cool atmospheric rocker worthy of a good headbang. Trouble Lies Within is however, the Ep’s stand out track. An enormous masterpiece of various musical influences, from a North African vibe which is blended into the piece the icing. Tinariwen comes to mind. Spoken word is also added and with guitar playing crunching your brain it all comes together to enhance the track to another level. All in all it gives you everything you need whilst listening to a piece of music.

Deano has certainly thrown the J.F. shackles off with this his first solo recording. Yes there is a feel of his main band at times and this is to be expected with his band mates so strongly supporting him here, but this is a Deano effort. You can feel his enthusiasm seeping out of every note on every track. The tone he has produced from his guitars is something you expect to hear from guitarists such as Blackmore, Morse and Satriani. Eighties shredding jumps out at times but don’t let that statement put you off. It’s all done in the best possible taste and his playing is on fire. His brain must be exploding with ideas as it has rumoured that a double album is in the making. Now I can’t wait to hear that if this is anything to go by. Deano, congrats on being fresh.

Trouble Lies Within is available to buy from Broken Road Records as a download or CD, which only 50 are available - http://www.brokenroadrecords.com/product-page/deano-silk-trouble-lies-within-2017
