The Erik Chandler Band - The Truth
Bowling For Soup man goes solo with impressive results
Words: Mick Birchall
When a member of a well established band decides to fly solo they usually have a lot to prove. Erik Chandler always felt like the most grounded member of Bowling For Soup. After talking to him on the recent UK tour I really felt like this was a man with a unique voice and something to say. So imagine my delight when I heard he was coming out with his debut solo album. The Truth is an easy to enjoy and light-hearted record that's full of great rock tunes. It's sure to bring a smile to your face.
The production is clear and all the elements are well balanced. Erik's well toned vocals conveying the emotion of the subject matters at hand. The album doesn't have a single dead spot and every moment has something that will get you nodding your head and humming along. As the melodies are pleasant to the ear, the album just allows you to get lost in the sound. Erik’s style of songwriting is quite cerebral although the music is quite fun and bouncy the lyrics and pensive and create a mood. It all helps build a picture in your mind. Be it having fun in Malibu Classic or going through the motions in a relationship with This Time, Erik has the perfect blend of catchy melody and descriptive lyricism.
When I first played this album I immediately liked it. Now, I’ve had some time to let it set in, I still love it and I think it’s up there as one of the finer albums of the year. I think that has a lot to do with the clear and concise production.
Everything about this album just pops and every member of the band plays a key part in making it sound awesome. The classic rock sound is great and makes the album feel somewhat timeless. I think the fact that Erik has waited until his 40’s to release his debut gives it that little extra punch. This is a man who has gone through a lot giving the album a, somewhat, contemplative feel to it. I have to say I like this amalgamation of punk, surf rock, pop and classic rock.
This is a great album. I’m absolutely in love with this sound. The purity and sweetness of the sound makes it likeable and you feel rewarded for listening to it. This is something that everyone should get regardless of your usual music taste.
