Riffs For Revolution at The Bread Shed: Live Review

Opening this celebration are Deadwing who deliver a set of hauntingly melancholic songs which vary from being light to some seriously heavy riffage.  Describing themselves as gothic and psychic rock is fair but limiting as they are so much more, you can certainly hear early Jefferson Airplane in their sound too.  Manchester will be experiencing more from this band as they grow their wings, trust me.  Check out their video and give them a like…


The anger was palpable in the lyrics from Destroy Planets! singer Tanya which fitted in perfectly with the theme surrounding Riffs For Revolution, one minute singing sweetly, the next providing some seriously deep guttural sounds, another band to keep an eye on - at the moment there are some great bands coming out of Manchester playing modern metal, so it is interesting seeing where and how the genre is evolving.



And breathe… a cut down Cadence Noir provide a fabulous acoustic interlude with their gothic folk, mixing things up with protest songs, a sing-a-long with Fuck Fuck Boom Boom and an intriguing cover of Iron Maiden’s Fear Of The Dark, Emma’s violin defiantly cutting through the mix and providing an additional interest.  



Riffs for Revolution’s organiser Vickie Harley has her own band, the symphonic gothic metallers Pallas Athena. They are sadly sans drummer once more but have added an additional guitarist, Al Robinson, and that change has made a big difference to their sound. Todays performance is more confident and the music has a maturity to it so it will be interesting to see how they develop over the next year as every song now sounds epic, especially Hekate and The Summoning.



The last time I saw Silverchild they had only recently gained their new drummer, now he is fully bedded in and their sound is huge, quite Zeppelin-esque. The bass wraps itself around the drums effortlessly whilst Vic’s guitar is as fiery as ever and Alex’s voice is perfection itself, the funky groove they developed later on is the preverbial icing on the cake of an outstanding set.



It’s been a while since I’ve seen Chiasmata and what a change, this performance is a lot more dynamic and confident as they combine mathrock, prog, metal along a bit of djent and postrock too, all driven along by a strong sense of melody and songwriting. Bassist Zoe Gale whose vocals soared high and wide, also wins the award for the most stunning looking bass, and she is a formidable player too. It is impressive playing from the whole band too with a very strong colelction of songs, I can’t wait to see them again.



I have never failed to be impressed by Sky Valley Mistress and they remain one of my favourite local bands and tonight they come across as being more in tune with each other than ever before resulting in an edgy, dynamic and at times unpredictable performance all the way through a very exciting set. The closer, Electric Church, creates so much tension that you could cut it with a knife.
They are back in Manchester on 2nd October at Jimmy’s, be there and experience what I keep banging on about, you won’t be disappointed.



The closers for this festival are Brummies Dakesis and they are delivering a full hour of progressive power metal, or power prog metal, or… you get the picture, and although I’ve never seen them before I am hugely impressed. Gemma Lawler’s vocals are incredibly powerful and the whole band are hotter than a pot of Coleman’s mustard - well worthy of their top slot tonight whilst also waving the flag for women in music!
They are back in Manchester for Badgerfest in a few weeks, you would be foolish to miss them.



I continue to be impressed by The Bread Shed, it could well become the new home for rock and metal in Manchester, it really is a superb venue.
