RIP Vinnie Paul
The tributes have poured in from all sections of the rock and metal community for the well loved drummer, songwriter and co-founder of the band Pantera, Vinnie Paul, has died aged 54.
The news was broken on the Pantera Facebook page with the statement:
"Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away. Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah. No further details are available at this time. The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time."
He formed Pantera with his brother Dimebag Darrell in 1981 and four of their songs going on to earn Grammy nominations for best metal performance - I'm Broken, Suicide Note Pt. I, Cemetery Gates, and Revolution Is My Name.
Pantera disbanded in 2003 with Dimebag and Vinnie going on to form Damageplan; sadly, on 8th December, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot dead onstage in Columbus, Ohio. Damageplan splitting shortly thereafter. Following a long break from the music scene, Vinnie Paul joined the heavy metal supergroup Hellyeah, who released a total of five albums.
